Chief Minister Oommen Chandy declared open the Trivandrum International Stadium at Karyavattom today. The stadium, which will be fully complete by mid 2015 with facilities such as Clubhouse, Convention centre, Shopping mall, etc, is now ready as venue for the Games’ opening ceremony on Saturday, January 31.
In his inaugural address the Chief Minister said that getting the new stadium ready in time is a wonderful achievement. The blooming of new Games venues across the State would even open up possibilities of developing Sports Tourism in a big way, he added.
Sports Minister ThiruvanchoorRadhakrishnan, in his presidential address, stated that Kerala is passing through a renaissance in sports which was evident from the huge success of Run Kerala Run.
National Games Chief Executive Jacob Punnoose reported that the unique PPP model, based on which this stadium was built, is an ideal one for creating infrastructure such as this stadium.
The stadium design matches with the stipulated norms of the ICC and FIFA for international cricket and football matches. 50% roofing using anti-UV Tensile fabric, has also been provided.
The stadium has been demarcated into four zones, where north zone is dedicated for Cricket, east zone for Football and each zone has players’ lounge, gymnasium, media centre and stock room. Shopping malls and food court are placed in the south zone. The adjoining pavilion accommodates latest facilities for Squash, Volley Ball, Basket Ball, Table Tennis and an Olympic size swimming pool.
The first fully eco-friendly stadium in India, it will be surrounded by green plants and also has a rain water harvesting facility. The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority and Pollution Control Board have commended the builders for the green initiatives taken.
