Ahead of the 35th National Games that will be held in the state from January 31 to February 14, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the new Trivandrum International Stadium at Karyavattom here this evening.
The multi-purpose stadium is slated to be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the is scheduled to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the National Games.
Construction of the stadium, a public-private partnership (PPP) project, was taken up in 2012 and has been completed at a cost of about Rs 161 crore.
The stadium has a seating capacity of 50,000 and can host both football and cricket matches as well as indoor sport.
The staidum also has facilities like players’ lounge, gymnasium, media centre, shopping outlets and food courts. There is also a convention centre and club house. There are indoor courts for squash, volleyball, table tennis and basketball along with an Olympic size swimming pool. There will also be parking facilities for about 2000 vehicles.
