THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the Trivandrum International Stadium, Kariavattom, at 5 pm on Monday. The multi-purpose arena is scheduled to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 35th National Games to be held in the state from January 31 to February 14.

The stadium began its construction in 2012 with IL&FS Transportation Network Limited being the designer and builder. The facility, one of the first stadiums to be constructed under a private-public partnership, is being completed at a cost of Rs 161 crore.
Sports Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Speaker G Karthikeyan, Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty, Finance Minister K M Mani, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Health Minister V S Sivakumar, Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb, Mayor K Chandrika, MPs Shashi Tharoor and A Sampath, former Union minister O Rajagopal and former sports minister M Vijayakumar are expected to attend the inaugural ceremony at the stadium.
The 50,000-seater arena is capable of hosting both football and cricket matches seamlessly once the construction is fully complete, according to officials. Both Kerala Cricket Association and Kerala Football Association have expressed interest in conducting tournaments at the venue.
